About Undertones
Having played in a variety of musical projects, from conventional to experimental, both musicians have a long musical past which included several endeavors in which their paths crossed. Being drawn to immersive experience and having experimented in-depth with creating complex multi-sensory experience, guerilla events and alternative performance settings, the artists were eventually drawn to recording in abandoned Military - Industrial complexes. The goal was not only to capture the unique tonal qualities of the space and to use the infrastructure itself to make music, but to generate living energy in abandoned and often poisoned institutions. Through these experiments Evan and Sasha were invited to create a site-specific installation for The Mizel Museum's exhibit regarding Genocide.
The musicians began from the sounds created in abandoned spaces, but the project quickly grew into new realms of musical exploration. Realizing the depth and complexity of the subject matter and learning more about global events made it apparent that although there were similarities, each continent seemed to have its own unique story. We began to study each atrocity and try to tell the story in the voice of the culture from which the horror arose. It also become increasingly impossible to ignore the current events unfolding in war zones where the American government is involved and the long term impact of armaments using depleted uranium. It was also impossible to avoid considering environmental crimes that risk the health of the entire planet's population. The overriding themes that arose from the soundtrack, consciously as well as unconsciously were always the ability of one people to suffer while the rest of the population goes on with mundane experience, only occasionally becoming conscious of the death and inhumanity their apathy enables.
Feeling emboldened and empassioned by the ability of this project to reach audiences and raise awareness, the Undertones artists look forward to new opportunities to create music and / or immersive experiences with purpose.
